On Sunday 29 May 2016 the second Lewisham InterFaith March for Peace was held, hosted by Lewisham Metropolitan Police.

At least 200 people gathered at Catford & Bromley Synagogue who hosted lunch.  We marched on to the Civic Suite in Catford, then on to Lewisham Islamic Centre where the Imam spoke powerfully of the cooperation that exists amongst the faith groups in Lewisham. We proceeded to St Mary’s CofE Church, St Saviour’s RC Church, the Lewisham Sivan Temple where we were served with hot spicy snacks, concluding at Lewisham Police Station.  At each location a candle was lit and a few words spoken.

We were joined by Mayor Steve Bullock, Heidi Alexander MP (Shadow Health Secretary), Councillor Janet Daby and Joe Oakley (Deputy Superintendant of the Met Police in Lewisham), along with several Lewisham Street Pastors.

It was a great day demonstrating both the diversity and unity shared amongst the major faith groups in Lewisham.

Inter Faith Walk For Peace

On Sunday 17th  July St Mary’s congregation said goodbye to Fr Richard Peers after 3 wonderful years as Assistant Priest at St Mary’s Lewisham. We give thanks for Fr Richard’s time with us and all he has contributed to our life together. In particular we have valued the depth of his own spirituality, his prayerfulness and special times such as Lent and Holy Week devotions. And of course, his love, his humour – and his laugh!

The wider community of Lewisham has greatly benefitted from his leadership as Executive Head at Trinity CE Primary and Secondary schools over the past 6 years. Fr Richard created the ethos and strong Christian character of the new Trinity Secondary school in 2010. Both schools are now in a strong position to grow, not only in academic success, but also in  as Christian communities with Christ at their heart and centre: ‘a place for everyone at the table’.

As well as our gifts for Fr Richard, including a beautiful chasuble for Our Lady, he also present a gift to the parish, a banner of the wonderful icon of Our Lady of Lewisham. St Mary’s church and the Vicar are now ‘Guardian’ of the icon itself and it will continue to travel to St Mary’s for special celebrations and during school holidays.

We wish Fr Richard, Jamie and Marny our love and God’s blessing as they move to Liverpool, for Fr Richard to take up his new position of Diocesan Director of Education in September, with responsibility for al CofE schools in the diocese of Liverpool. As he would say, ‘Deo gratias’!

Farewell to Fr Richard Peers

St Augustine’s Church, Rugeley was full for Fr David Evans’s induction as Team Rector for Brereton and Rugeley. He was inducted by Revd Dr Michael Ipgrave, the newly-installed Bishop of Lichfield, formerly Bishop of Woolwich. It was a wonderful service and heart-warming to see Bishop Michael, Fr Steve, Fr David and Fr Richard Peers reunited after three of them had migrated northward from Southwark Diocese. There was an excellent reception across the road in the primary school hall where we were able to mingle and meet with the Rugeley and Brereton congregations. Mark Symons, our Parish Treasurer, met the Parish Treasurer of St Augustine’s immediately and by accident. I was shown the ruins of the ancient church across the road by a prime mover of the local history society who had also been churchwarden and parish treasurer. St Augustine’s is very well maintained and organised and comfortable.

The rain had stopped by the time we set off home which was appreciated but it was a shock to discover that the last train to London at 8pm stopped at every station all the way to Euston. A long journey for all heading back to Lewisham. Julian Watson

Father David’s Induction

Sunday 22 January saw a special celebration for the Mothers’ Union at St Mary’s.

Norma Dixon was commissioned as Branch Leader for St Mary’s Lewisham Mothers’ Union Branch.

Then Norma presented eight new members to be enrolled into St Mary’s Mothers’ Union.

All members present gathered at the altar as Fr Steve commissioned Norma, welcomed the new members and blessed the work of the MU here in Lewisham and throughout the world.

The ceremony ended with all members saying together the Prayer of the Mothers’ Union.

Even more exciting, as a result of this event, others from the congregation expressed a desire to enrol as new members into our MU branch.
