Youth and Children’s Church
Children and Young People at St Mary’s
Children and young people are valued and nurtured at St Mary’s and are encouraged to take an active part in the life of the church. They are fully involved in our worship, in singing, in serving at the altar, in reading scripture and leading prayers. We believe they are the Church of Today, not simply the Church of tomorrow.
The 10.00am Sunday mass is always a busy and lively experience at St .Mary’s, usually with baptisms on the first Sunday each month. Children of all ages are welcome to be part of the service and in addition we offer Children’s Church and Youth Church, sharing time together then rejoining the service for communion.
A safe, carpeted play area in the church is available for parents with infants and toddlers. Feel free to move around the building during the service or pop out and come in again: we want everyone to feel relaxed and welcome in our worship.
Children from age 4 – 11 years are invited to attend our Children’s Church in the Crypt Room with worship, singing and fun activities.
Our Youth Church, 11 – 16 year olds, meets in the Sacristy for discussion based on the Gospel Reading followed by their own age-
Our young people play a full part in our life: recently our Youth Church raised £700 for the repair of our church roof, holding a sleepover in the Crypt Room. A Teddy Bears’ picnic in the vicarage garden is an annual feature for the Children’s Church and toddlers.
Children, age 9 and over who regularly attend mass with their families are prepared for their First Communion each spring, and enjoy a trip to Southwark Cathedral to learn about the wider Church family. Confirmation is then offered for those aged 14 or over, receiving the Chrism of the Holy Spirit.
Through the Church year there are special celebrations and activities for our young Christians, as well as activities and trips outside of Sunday worship.
On Christmas Eve the younger children put on a traditional Nativity ably directed by one of our Youth leaders and supported by the Youth Church and choir. Children and adults together enjoy preparing Christingles for the Crib Service, which is very popular.
On Good Friday there is a special workshop for all our children followed by the Stations of the Cross, then hot cross buns. Harvest, Mothering Sunday and Pentecost are services in which the children take a large part in leading the worship. During the summer holidays our Musical Director leads a weekly music workshop for the children where they learn how to make a joyful noise to the Lord!
