Welcome to St.Mary the Virgin Lewisham
‘WATCH and PRAY’
As we begin the season of Lent, we give thanks for this joyful time, a season of reflection, hope and new life. Lent is a gift from the Church, an invitation to draw closer to God. It’s an opportunity to follow Jesus more closely, to love God and to love others as he did – and as he still does today.
Our theme this year is ‘Watch and Pray’, from the words of Jesus to the disciples in the Garden of Gethsemane. All our regular services and additional activities for Lent appear here. There are discussion groups after our Sunday mass and after our Thursday mass. Stations of the Cross each Friday at 6.00 pm in church. Film group each Saturday morning at 10.30 in the Crypt Room, looking at the film ‘From now on’.
Each Sunday evening, Night Prayer or Evensong in church.
We should not try to do everything in Lent – it’s not a competition.
It is simply an opportunity to be with the Lord, to listen and reflect, to be fed and nourished: to ‘Watch and Pray’.
We will also support Bishop Christopher’s Lent appeal, to help Christians in the Holy Land and in Zimbabwe at this difficult time. Details here: southwark.anglican.org/lentcall
Every blessing for a prayerful and holy Lent, that we may walk together to share in the death and resurrection of the Lord at Easter.
