St Mary the Virgin is the ancient parish church of Lewisham and a vibrant, living Christian family today.
Our life and worship is centred on the Eucharist, the Bread of Life for all Christians. Here we celebrate and receive the love and presence of God in Jesus Christ.
As an Anglican church, St Mary’s enjoys modern catholic worship, with a sense of mystery and awe, beauty and fun. We believe in an enquiring faith open to reason and challenge.
We are a diverse and inclusive community and we work to link our faith to practical action and the needs of God’s world. We are also good at celebrating life together!
St Mary’s has shared God’s love with the people of Lewisham for over 1000 years – we continue to do this today in new and creative ways. We celebrate the strengths of this community and we shine God’s light in places of darkness.
You are welcome at St.Mary’s
It was with great sadness that we learned at St Mary’s of the sudden death of Canon David Garlick while on holiday in Grenada last weekend. Fr David died from a heart attack while on holiday with friends. He died in a place he loved, with people he loved.
His body will be flown back to the UK. Arrangements are being made for his funeral service to be held at St John the Divine, Kennington. Only last year Fr David celebrated his 50th anniversary of priesting at a wonderful mass at St John’s.
Fr David gave so much to so many during his ministry. He remains much loved at St Mary the Virgin, Lewisham, where he was Vicar for 28 years. We give thanks for his ministry here and all that he meant to the community in Lewisham.
We will keep Fr David in our prayers and a requiem mass will be said for him at St Mary’s.
Rest eternal grant unto him, O Lord: and let light perpetual shine upon him.
May he rest in peace and rise in glory.
